What the assessment looks at
A replacement recommendation should be based on your house, not only on the size of the old unit.
- Your current equipment, its age, and its condition
- How the house heats and cools today, room by room
- Ductwork, where there is any
- Electrical capacity for heat-pump options
- What you want to change: comfort, efficiency, noise, or moving off gas

Heating and cooling an ADU or garage conversion

HVAC questions
What’s the difference between a heat pump and an air conditioner?
Both move heat using refrigerant. An air conditioner only cools. A heat pump can reverse the process to heat the house as well, which lets it replace a furnace.
How long does a heating and cooling system usually last?
Many systems last roughly 10 to 20 years, depending on the type of equipment, how it was installed, and how well it has been maintained.
