EV charger installation
Installing a home EV charger
A Level 2 charger adds range much faster than a standard outlet. Installation depends on your panel capacity and the distance from the panel to where you park.
When this makes sense
- You have, or are getting, an electric vehicle
- Charging from a standard outlet is too slow
- You want a charger in the garage or at the driveway
- You’re planning for a second EV
What the assessment covers
- Panel capacity and available breaker space
- Distance and route from the panel to the parking spot
- Indoor or outdoor mounting
- The charger you have or plan to buy
Options to discuss
Hardwired Level 2 charger
Wired directly to a dedicated circuit.
240-volt outlet
For a plug-in charger you can take with you.
Shared or load-managed charging
Two vehicles on one circuit, or charging that adjusts to the rest of the house.

If the panel is near capacity, a load-management device or panel upgrade may be needed.
Long wire runs, trenching, or outdoor installation add scope.
Questions about EV chargers
What amperage charger do I need?
Many homes do well with a 32 to 48 amp charger. The right size depends on your car’s onboard charger, how far you drive, and what your panel can support.
