PLUMBING Whole-home repiping

Replacing the pipes that supply your home

Older supply piping can corrode, clog, or start leaking in more than one place. When repairs keep coming back, replacing the supply lines throughout the house can be the more permanent fix.

Request an assessment

When this makes sense

  • You have galvanized steel or polybutylene supply pipes
  • Leaks keep appearing in different places
  • Water pressure has dropped or water is discolored
  • You’re remodeling and walls are already open

What the assessment covers

  • Pipe material and condition where it can be seen
  • Water pressure at fixtures
  • Access routes through attic, crawlspace, or walls
  • Which fixtures and shutoff valves will be replaced

Options to discuss

PEX

Flexible piping that usually needs fewer wall openings; widely used for repiping.

Copper

Long-established rigid piping; more labor to route through a finished home.

Partial repipe

Replacing only the worst sections when the rest is in good condition.

Scope to plan for

Repiping requires opening some walls or ceilings. Your proposal should say how many openings and who patches them.

Water is shut off during parts of the work; plan around it.

Questions about repiping

Can I stay in the house during repiping?

In most repipes, yes. Water is typically off for part of each workday rather than the whole project.

PEX or copper?

Both are accepted for home supply lines. PEX usually means fewer wall openings and less labor; some homeowners prefer copper. The assessment covers both.
