Replacing your water heater
A water heater that’s leaking, running out of hot water, or near the end of its life is worth replacing before it fails. Replacement is also a chance to change the type of unit you have.
When this makes sense
- The tank is leaking, rusting, or showing water at the base
- You run out of hot water more often than before
- The unit is more than about 10 years old
- You want to move from gas to an electric heat pump water heater
What the assessment covers
- Current unit type, size, age, and fuel
- Venting, gas supply, or electrical capacity for the new unit
- Location, clearances, and seismic strapping
- How much hot water the household uses
Options to discuss
Tank (gas or electric)
A like-for-like replacement, usually the simplest option.
Tankless
Heats water on demand; needs an adequate gas line or electrical capacity, and suitable venting.
Heat pump water heater
An efficient electric option that needs space, air circulation, and a condensate drain.

Scope to plan for
California requires water heaters to be strapped for earthquakes. Your proposal should include strapping that meets current requirements.
Switching to tankless or a heat pump water heater may require gas, venting, or electrical changes. LevelUP can plan the plumbing and electrical sides together.
Questions about water heater replacement
Should I switch to a heat pump water heater?
It can lower energy use and move you off gas, but it needs enough space, a nearby 240-volt circuit, and a place to drain condensate. The assessment checks whether your location works.
