Upgrading your electrical panel
An electrical panel distributes power to every circuit in the house. Older or undersized panels can limit what you can add, and some older panel models are a known safety concern.
When this makes sense
- You’re adding a heat pump, EV charger, induction range, or other large load
- The panel is full with no room for new breakers
- Breakers trip often, or the panel feels warm
- The panel is an older model with known safety concerns, such as Federal Pacific or Zinsco
What the assessment covers
- Current panel rating, brand, and condition
- Load calculation for existing and planned equipment
- Service entrance, meter, and grounding
- Panel location and required clearances
Options to discuss
Panel replacement
A new panel at your current service size, when capacity is sufficient but the panel isn’t.
Service upgrade
Increasing service, for example from 100 to 200 amps, coordinated with the utility.
Load management
A device that balances large loads, sometimes avoiding an upgrade where the calculation allows.
How the work goes
- 01RequestCall or send a short request with your city or ZIP and what’s going on. Tell us how you’d like to be contacted.
- 02AssessmentWe look at the equipment or system involved, the house, and what you want to change, and answer your questions.
- 03ProposalYou receive written options that spell out the scope of each, so you can compare them side by side.

- 05Follow-upWe walk you through what was done and check in afterward to make sure everything is working as expected.
Scope to plan for
A service upgrade involves the utility and can add weeks to the timeline, depending on their schedule.
Power is off for part of the work.
Questions about panel upgrades
Can I upgrade the panel and install a heat pump together?
Yes. Planning them together avoids doing electrical work twice. Ask for both in the same assessment.
