Heating and cooling an ADU or garage conversion
Extending the main system often isn’t practical for a new living space. Ductless heat pumps are a common alternative.
Why not extend the main system
The existing system may not have spare capacity, and running ducts to a detached or converted space can be difficult. A separate system also lets the unit be controlled on its own.
Ductless mini-splits
A mini-split heat pump heats and cools without ducts. A single-zone system is often enough for a studio; larger units may need more than one indoor head.
Things to plan early
- Electrical capacity for the new space, especially if it has its own subpanel
- Where the outdoor unit will sit
- Indoor unit placement relative to furniture and windows
- Condensate drainage
